Early Childhood Screening for Preschoolers

Attention parents of preschoolers – did you know that the State of Minnesota requires that your child participates in an Early Childhood Screening? What is this screening and why does your child have to do it?

The Early Childhood Screening is an opportunity for educational professionals to identify potential developmental concerns before your child starts school and to provide early intervention services that can help them in areas where they struggle. It is not an IQ test or an entrance exam for Kindergarten.  It does not cost you anything and to your child, it is a chance to play some games and do some activities that they will have fun doing.

The best age for your child to participate in the screening process is three years old.  The screening can be done with older preschoolers, as well, but waiting too long may not allow adequate time for an intervention plan to be implemented before your child starts school.

When you attend the screening, you will be asked to bring with you your child’s immunization records along with the contact information for their primary physician.  You will also be encouraged to share any concerns that you may have about your child’s development.

Upon completion of the screening, you will receive a summary of the findings in areas such as vision and hearing; speech and motor development; social and behavioral development and other health and wellness areas.  This summary will indicate whether there are any areas of concern that may require further testing.

Early Childhood Screenings must be completed in the school district that you live in. Although the Early Childhood Screening process is based on standards set by the State of Minnesota, each district will handle the scheduling and other details differently.  Below is some general information about Early Childhood Screenings for School Districts that surround All Stars Montessori.  To get more information on Early Childhood Screening, be sure to visit your local school districts website.
